What’s In My Diaper Bag? A Humorous Look At A Working Mom’s Life In A Bag?

As a business owner and mom, I regularly commute between my home office and a rented office space. Sometimes I begin to feel like a baggage handler by the time I make it to the office. Believe me, toting a laptop computer, diaper bag, stack of files, lunch for the day and my infant son is no easy task. I am hoping it counts as exercise though!The diaper bag I carry seems to have taken on a life of its own as it has grown to its capacity. It definitely holds more than baby items. It is my lifeline!I recently went through my bag hoping to scale down a bit. Here are some of the items I found:•Diapers and Wipes and other baby things (it IS a diaper bag after all)•Cell Phone (doubles as a teether, but don’t forget to lock your keypad so baby can’t call Tokyo)•Tylenol For Baby•Tylenol For Me (or something stronger)•Business Cards•Energy Bars (sometimes lunch is a luxury)•Telephone Headset (device that allows you to breastfeed, talk on the phone and work on the computer at the same time).•Loose Change (usually left over from a McDonalds drive-thru trip)•Crayons and a Coloring Book (to keep my 4 year old occupied while I’m on the phone with clients)•Dollar Bills (to bribe my 4 year old while I’m on the phone with clients)•Duct Tape (for emergencies only….again with the 4 year old and being on the phone with clients)•Sandwich Bag full of Cheerios (for baby and sometimes the energy bars aren’t enough)•To Do List (in case you actually find time to work)In my attempt to scale down, I realized I just needed a bigger diaper bag. I see no reason to fight it. My needs will only increase as my son gets older and more mobile. Diaper bag designs will just have to evolve to work for me!Right now I am thinking one with wheels would be good. I can picture it now: a huge diaper bag on wheels that will hold all of the above items, plus my files, my laptop and my lunch with an infant seat mounted on top for my son.In all seriousness, diaper bags have come a long way since my daughter was born. I did end up scaling down a bit and began shopping for something a little more sophisticated. Something without a bunny design would be a great start! I was really pleased to find a great selection of fashion forward bags for moms. They are functional yet hip! The available fabrics are out of this world and you can find every style and size imaginable. I finally settled on a bag that fits both my mom and business owner lifestyles. I feel like a million bucks now.Well actually, a million bucks is a bit of an exaggeration. The diaper bag was a tremendous improvement to my “look” but I will still need to do something about my ponytail and sweatpants. That will have to be a different article.

Having Self Confidence, Through Life Training, Creates a Fulfilling Life

Whenever I look in the mirror, I see a “stud … not a dud!” If honest confession is good for the soul, in order to be truthful, sometimes I see a “dud not a stud.” Tiredness, mental fatigue, spiritual doubts, inhibitions and poor nutrition … all of these can play a part. But we always have a choice we only need to make the right one. We must absolutely determine that we will not be led about by our feelings. Whether we “feel” good or “feel” bad is not the issue. It should be a question of “What is my worth?” Am I proud of life’s success, achievements, and skills? If not, then you should find ways for life training to improve performance, after all it’s for your own personal good.

The issue is way deeper than feelings. Feelings are the result of many related factors. It could be last night’s pizza… confronting this morning’s flat tire. These stressors and frustrations will start an avalanche headed to “you know where” if we don’t stop them. Our faith in ourselves, our lives, our decisions and on and on… Will mentally get called into question and eventually we can fall in to depression. A logical worthwhile investment would be is to invest on a life training in building skills to become more successful in life.

One day a well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In a room of about 200 people, he asked, “What is this piece of paper & is it worth anything?”

“It is a $20 bill … it’s worth $20! Someone shouted out.

He then began to crumple the dollar bill up using both his hands till it became nothing but a handful of wadded up paper. He unfolded it again and tried to smooth it out… and asked, “would you still be able to buy $20 worth of goods for this?’

“Yes!!” everyone agreed.

“Well,” he said, “Looks like I haven’t done enough! What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. What is it worth now?

“It’s still worth 20 Dollars,” Everyone agreed.

“My friends, there is a very valuable lesson in this exercise that we just went through. I was able to reshape, deface, mutilate & alter the $20 bill during the process. “However, no matter what I did to this piece of paper, you still said it was worth $20.”

“Many times in our lives, we feel like as if we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and/or the circumstances we go through. We feel as though we are worthless. It may also appear to onlookers as if it has really happened to a certain extent. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, please remember you never lose your “Value”.”

Think back on those who never lost faith in their abilities, when you fail or go through times of doubt,

Sir Edmund Hillary refused to accept failure as an option. His displays of superhuman will power were displayed by being the first man to climb Mount Everest. On May 29, 1953 he scaled the highest mountain then known to man … 29,000 feet straight up. He was knighted for his endeavor. He even made American Express card commercials because of it!

Did you know Hillary had to grow into this success? You see, in 1952 he attempted to climb Mount Everest, but failed. A few weeks later a group in England asked him to address its members. Hillary walked on stage to thunderous applause.

He moved away from the microphone and walked to the edge of the platform. He made a fist and pointed at a picture of the mountain. He said in a loud voice, “Mount Everest, you beat me the first time, but I’ll beat you the next time because you’ve grown all you are going to grow… but I’m still growing!” He never lost faith in himself!

Another brilliant example:

There was once a boy who started speaking later than most. He was definitely not a good all-around student. His teachers found him to be a problem child. He had odd mannerisms … he had no friends … and his father was ashamed of him because he had no athletic ability.

Eccentrics are often associated as being geniuses in more ways than one can imagine. He had to leave school for six months during his senior year because of a nervous breakdown. But I’m glad he didn’t give up. His name was Albert, Albert Einstein. He never lost faith in himself! Oh, by the way, did you hear about the family that kept taking Einstein vacations? That’s one where everything was “relative!’’ You visit aunts, uncles, etc.

You have to shake off these “feelings” when you start to lose faith in yourself.

Some people call these positive statements … affirmations. Mark Victor Hanson and Robert Allen in their great book One Minute Millionaire call them manifestations. Manifest means to “make appear” A deeper meaning means to reach from the visible world … by faith …through an invisible veil … and pull something back. It manifests itself.

That is what positive self talk can do. It can help you shake off these bad “vibes” and manifest a better self image. This will keep you from losing faith in yourself and give the negative notion of asking yourself “What is my worth?”

If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give into panic, refuse to give into bitterness, and refuse to give into self-pity … THE ADVERSITIES THAT COME ALONG TO BURY US USUALLY HAVE WITHIN THEM THE POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT US …AND BLESS US!

Determination amidst hindrances while enduring the ravages of decrepit negative stimulus forges a man with a conviction like no other. Life Training is About ?The Essence of Humility to Overcome Prejudice

Coach Life free from prejudices! When it comes to this crucial subject a person’s typical inclination would be to base it on race, sex, social status and so on. But let us delve on this on much broader since first and foremost it is a people issue of vital importance. Ask yourself, is this my worth? Is this your worth?

Often times we neglect to empathize on what others are going through. We are viewing it in our own perspective as opposed to walking in their shoes. It is an egotistic approach that is often dubbed as being self centered. When we discriminate on others we are venturing on a reproachable act of playing. First and foremost we have no idea on what those people are going through. What is my worth? Am I doing my Personal Mission?

There are certain factors that affect people to act beyond the accepted social norms it could be stress and imminent fight or flight mechanism triggered due to an emergency. Like a mom rushing through traffic worried of her child. She had worked nine hours at an under appreciated, under paid job that day. She’s eagerly driving home because she still has to cook for her children, help them with their homework, do laundry and then hopefully … if time allows … spend a few precious moments with her children which is the most important thing.

We need to remember …that the haggard looking, body pierced, overtly tattooed, disinterested and disillusioned young man who is having problems making change correctly is, in fact, an extremely stressed and worried 19-year-old college student. He’s currently mentally juggling and balancing his apprehensions over taking final exams … with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

We need to remember … that the feeble elderly couple walking so “stinking” slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress is savoring and enjoying this precious moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, if God doesn’t intervene, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Drop all your pre conceived ideas and be open to see the good in others, regardless of their appearance, reputation or actions. Let us not judge or prejudge. Empathize with others get to know them beyond the norm of social interaction, who knows we might make a significant impact on their lives.

I would like to share an interesting story I read recently. After a recent long trip from Boston, there was an older couple who I got a chance to be acquainted with. The lady adorned her hair in a neat bun while wearing a faded gingham dress. Her husband was elegantly dressed in a homespun threadbare suit. They left the train and walked rather shyly, without an appointment into the office of the president of Harvard University!

The secretary could tell immediately that these backwoods country folks had absolutely no business at Harvard.

“We’d like to see the president,” the man said softly.

“He’ll be busy all day,” the secretary snapped back at him.

“We’ll wait,” the lady replied.

With an indignant air of arrogance and prejudice the secretary ignored them for hours on end hoping that eventually they would go away. But alas they didn’t. This infuriated the secretary that prompted her to go to the president and deal with the predicament.

“Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they’ll leave, “she told him. He shrugged and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn’t have the time to spend with them, but he detested people in gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering his “big shot” office.

So, the President, “strutted his stuff” toward the couple. The lady told him, “We had a son that attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard, and was very– happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him somewhere on campus.

“The president wasn’t even close to being touched by this! “Madam,” he said gruffly, “we can’t put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery.”

He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, and then said, “A building!! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars worth of buildings at Harvard!!”

For a moment the lady was silent. The president was obviously pleased. He had put her in her place. He could finally get rid of them now.

The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, “Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don’t we just start our own?” Her husband nodded. And they left.

That day Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, CA where they established the University that bears their name… Stanford University. It’s a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about. Never … ever prejudge.

Ladies and gents what we have here is an ill fated stroke of luck that wasn’t capitalized on due to being haughtily prejudiced. Never judge a book by its cover. Never prejudice your opinions with a circumstantial filter on your heart. Everyone has a Life Course, has Life Business and has a Personal Mission that cannot be gauge by outside appearance.

Have you ever been a coach to a neighborhood team? I know how it feels the first time I’ve coached a team of seven-year-old soccer kids and how much they can really test my patience, not to mention sanity as they run around kicking the ball like ants to a huge, white crumb. It feels strange at first, having to be stared at by a bunch of kids who they will know that I’m not the one in the field. Sounds wrong in a sense, right? But what is the dead about coaching?

Coaching is all about being a, well, ‘coach’ in the corporate world of handlers, front-liners and even a couple of benchwarmers biding their time to be given a chance to perform. I know how that feels when I go back to my regular day job. Some players are just MVP material, and some of them are just to support the MVP’s so why bother sticking around? It sounds ironic when they say ‘there is no I in team’, but even the underachievers can be sore losers as well.

These are steps that can be done within the day, and no matter what, it takes determination to be a coach.

1. There is a WHOLE lot of talk these days about Corporate Team Building. There are many, many options: vacation packages, rope courses, on-going office games, ice-breakers, etc. Management can also purchase videos, books, and seminar packages to assist them in building up their organization into a team worthy of belonging. A little later I will give you some ideas of where you can go for information on these team-building tools.

2. The truth about motivation is waiting to be grasped! It is ripe and ready for you to put into action today. Don’t settle for mind-numbing gibberish. Get practical in 3 small ways to begin looking forward to your alarm clock sounding off each morning before you huddle with the team.

3. Experience is the best thing despite of what course you graduated in. There is something about being a people person who knows how to stir the energetic side of one individual, and more so when you mix it up with an entire team.

4. To question a person by his or her performance is sometimes required, but never question their knowledge or their intelligence. Sadly, I have seen a few mistakes from past coaches who never seem to understand what a player has to go through to get the job right. It will lead to further aggravation and maybe even hostility. If you want the job done right, then go do it yourself. You’ll see how it is to be at the receiving end and it will help your set a much better course for improvement.

5. Sending a player to the bench is probably the worse experience a coach has to go through, especially if your player is the top performer. In dealing with this kind of person, see to it that he spills his guts voluntarily. Egotism in a performer tends to make them lose their focus on even the smallest mistakes, then you can catch him or her red handed. Be firm, but understanding about it.

6. Don’t allow your position to blind you from what you are supposed to do. Even coaches are human enough to think that they are far more superior, but only by rank. Even if you have been in their shoes when you were their age, it’s better to dole out a piece of wisdom in order for them to realize that this will be for their own benefit.

7. Lastly, you should learn to trust yourself and your team. Decisions and performance are primarily your goals, and there are many of them to see if they could perform the task much more efficiently. So before you think about sending one member to the bench, have a good chat with him or her and see if they have any problems. If it’s too personal, then just encourage them to do their best and it also helps to give them a good, encouraging slap on the back.

I guess there’s all there is to it. Being a corporate drone myself, I know how important it is for a company to be successful, and we’re all part of that success. Coaches are there not to make your work a little difficult just because you have either an attitude problem or not much a performer, but they’re the guides who will help you perform as hard as you can possibly can. You’ll do them proud one of these days, as well as you.
